Why I Still Love a Good Terminal Prompt

Thirty years into this career and I still get a small, genuine kick out of a blank terminal prompt. No dashboard, no spinner, no notification badges — just a cursor waiting to see what you’re going to ask of it.

I’ve watched a lot of tools come and go promising to replace the command line with something friendlier. Some of them are genuinely good. But there’s a directness to typing a command and getting exactly what you asked for, nothing dressed up, nothing hidden behind a click-through wizard.

Maybe it’s a generational thing. Maybe it’s just that after enough years of troubleshooting other people’s systems, plain text feels like honesty. Whatever it is, I don’t think I’ll ever fully trade it in.
